Last season's biggest retro trend was the seventies comeback and this fall/winter season it's all about retro forties glamour.
Louis Vuitton, Jean Paul Gaultier, Gucci, Donna Karan, Blugirl, Oscar de la Renta, Bottega Veneta and Jason Wu are some of the designers who brought post-wartime fashion back to the runway for Fall/Winter 2011.
You may remember last winter granny chic was a big trend - this is a bit like it but more young, ladylike, glamorous and refined.
Nail retro 40's fashion under your abaya
- The two key pieces to this trend are the tea dress and the figure hugging pencil skirt.
- Tea dresses flatter all figures - they nip in at the waist which creates a waist for those with straighter figures and they drop down with an A-line skirt which skims over the hips and flatters curvier figures. Look for tea dresses with retro prints and team with mary-janes or t-bar shoes for a bang-on 40's look, or with kitten heels or pointed courts and a structured, ladylike bag for a more sophisticated, glamorous look, or with vintage looking brogues (heeled or flat) for a casual take. Wear opaque tights to cover your pins.
- Tuck in a pussy bow blouse or blouse with a Peter Pan collar into a long pencil skirt teamed with a skinny belt and pointed courts/kitten heels/mary janes - a perfect look for office wear and eveningwear.
- Can't find a long enough pencil skirt (i.e. a midi skirt)? Make sure you wear opaque tights or knee-high socks with your shoes to cover your shins.
- Make sure the straps on your mary janes/t-bar shoes are thin as wider straps cut off your ankles.
- For a more glam take on the trend fit for eveningwear, look for pussy bow blouses in satin and team with a long structured pencil skirt and wear with some glamorous jewelry.
- Nail two trends in one by opting for a ladylike bag in moc croc or ostrich skin.
- Learn how to layer by wearing a sleeveless Peter Pan collar top under collar-less/round neck tea dress.
- Want to incorporate some trousers into this trend? Tuck in a pussy bow blouse into high waisted trousers.
- Glamorous 40's extras: faux fur collars, pearls and vintage jewelry (e.g. Chanel).
